BREAKING: The four members of Korean girl group Blackpink have been cast in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender
HUGE NEWS: The first official castings for live-action ATLA have just been announced by Netflix:
- Jisoo Kim (26, Korean)
- Jennie Kim (25, Korean New Zealander)
- Roseanne “Rosé” Park (24, Korean Australian)
- Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban (24, Thai)
All four members of super-popular K-pop girl group Blackpink will appear in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender in as-of-yet undisclosed roles.
This comes from a joint press release from Netflix and YG Entertainment (the company that represents the four) on the Korean Netflix newsroom. Here’s the text in full, translated from Korean to English by Google Translate. An English-language press release hasn’t gone out yet as far as I can find.
Global sensation Blackpink joins Netflix for live-action 《Avatar: The Legend of Aang》 series adaptation
The Korean leaders take on a new frontier
Netflix and YG Entertainment are pleased to announce the participation of all four Blackpink members Ji-soo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa in the upcoming series 《Avatar: The Legend of Aang》. The four challengers will show new charms as actresses and soldiers in a highlighted exclusive position of the show, renews Korea and Thailand to the global stage. Please anticipate the exciting actions Blackpink will participate in.
This series is a new composition of the original plot of the 2005 work 《Avatar: The Legend of Aang》 , which became a youth classic. Four elements come to the forefront of a world at war: water, earth, fire, and wind.
This work will be released to the world on Netflix later next year.
EDIT: While I was making my graphics and writing this post it looks like the link to the press release stopped working, and it can’t be found in the newsroom anymore. I’m guessing it wasn’t supposed to go up yet and that’s why it didn’t exist in English and other languages… Let’s see if they say anything.
This is huge news, not just because we finally have our first official castings, but because Blackpink themselves are huge. They’re not particularly known for acting yet, but three out of the four members are fluent or proficient in English. Again, we have no idea what roles these will be but I’m guessing some kind of highly featured cameo rather than series regulars… If I was to totally guess, it’s possible they could be playing Kyoshi Warriors that aren’t Suki, but honestly I have no idea. One thing I am sure about is that this has to be expensive, which bodes well for the budget of the series.
I’m keeping my eye out for any further details on this. We could also be getting more casting soon. And, as previously reported, the series starts filming on August 16th in Vancouver, Canada so definitely expect more news to be ramping up soon.
